YOU'RE OUT
Director: LIUBA
Experimental, Color, 13 min.
Germany/Italy 2014-2016
English and German with English subtitles

34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
With “You're Out” LIUBA continues focusing on the European “Refugee Challenge“ and on the struggle for immigrant rights. The participative performance – from which the video is taken – is a public play of the children’s game, Musical Chairs (called Trip to Jerusalem, in Germany). The game symbolically mirrors what happens in reality: there is not always enough space for everyone.
The performance is conceived to include as participants both refugees and citizens representing the multiracial society of our times and focusing on the fact that the struggle of “not being excluded” is a universal issue concerning everyone. The location where the performance was held is very important and symbolic. It is Oranienplatz in Berlin, where the tent camp of the refugees' rights protest was held. The performance is just after the camp was evicted by the police. The performance ends with enough chairs for everyone. The last time the music stops, everyone finds a place, a chair of his/her own and no one will be expelled.

Director: Paula Gepard
Narrative, Color, 20 min.
Germany 2014

34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
The focus of this "tale" is the highly contested EU Agency entitled FRONTEX – which we would rather become FRONTex. The film portrays the motivation that forces human beings to leave their homes, the problems they meet on their way to Europe and at the border – caused mainly by European politics.

VIVIR EN LA MÚSICA / LIVE IN MUSIC
Directors: Galina Likosova & Hernán Humberto Restrepo
Documentary, Color, 59 min.
Colombia 2013
Spanish with English subtitles

34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
Rodolfo Pérez González

This story is about Rodolfo Pérez González, a character, who according to him, was born in the wrong place and the wrong time, with an internal need, genetics and being a musician in an adverse environment, where he develops an extraordinary work against all odds and difficulties, and at 84 is still working tirelessly.
Besides being recognized as choirmaster, music teacher, musical researcher, writer, business manager and director of cultural radio programs, the film presents little known facets of his great cultural and artistic background, Spanish roots and influences, paintings, compositions, his admiration for women composers, especially Black women composers*, and his work to spread and highlight the music of them. All these themes are developed in a pleasant chat in the comfort of his home and workspace.
Working and living in music throughout his life, he finally said: "I fought with Medellín." So he threw in the towel, gave up, lowered his spear against windmills. He fought with Medellín, but still works for it, because he can not stop. He was asked to compose, to conduct, but through the video he says no, because he is disillusioned, he is tired of fighting against windmills.
* Florence Beatrice Price, April 9, 1887, Little Rock, Arkansas – June 3, 1953, Chicago, Illinois. African American composer, arranger and teacher, first African American woman to have a symphony performed by a major orchestra.
34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019

* Florence Beatrice Price, 9. April, 1887, Little Rock, Arkansas – 3. Juni, 1953, Chicago, Illinois.

BLACK AND CUBA
Director: Robin J. Hayes
Documentary, Color, 82 min.
USA/Cuba 2013
English and Spanish with English subtitles

34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
"Black and Cuba" follows street-smart Ivy League students who are outcast at their elite university, band together and travel for adventure to Cuba to see if revolution is truly possible. With cutting-edge style and humor, this inspiring documentary illuminates how racial equality is an international human rights issue. The film also reveals a fresh perspective on the US-Cuba conflict. Due in part to the US government's ban on travel and trade with socialist Cuba since 1962, many Americans are unaware that the island's population is 60% Black. Human rights activists assert this embargo violates the human rights of Cubans and Americans. Intent on sharing their experiences, the students film their journey. Through the streets of Havana and Santiago, they observe the literal signs of revolution – "Venceremos! We will overcome!" – as well as moving hip-hop performances. A stirring block party at a racially integrated housing project impacts the travelers in surprising ways. Candid, spontaneous encounters with African Cubans highlight similarities between African American, Latino and Cuban experiences. Although Cuba declared racism illegal after 1959, the travelers' new friends describe recent experiences of racial profiling, police misconduct and employment discrimination. The students also see the positive benefits of Cuba's social safety net. African Cubans enjoy access to public education, health care and homeownership in a manner that remains out of reach for many of the students' neighbors and family members in the US. Despite witnessing the realities behind the myths of color-blindness and social mobility, the students return home empowered with renewed hope.

Director: Robin J. Hayes

ROOTS & BRANCHES – LETITIA MOORE

Letitia Moore

Letitia Moore, born in Belize, came to the United States as a small child after her mother died, and was raised by her grandmother. Theirs was a family of very modest means, but her academic promise and drive earned her scholarships to see her through law school and into service in the national Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), here she specialized in enforcement. In the interview, Ms. Moore commented that "I like to win." She is committed to community service, and for many years, sat on the city council of her city of residence (El Cerrito, California) including a term as mayor. She has been active in the local branch of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), chairing its scholarship committee, and has been active in other community organizations. Since the making of this documentary, under the extremely questionable leadership of Donald Trump, the EPA has had its budget cut and mission revised, so now, Ms. Moore works for a private law firm, but her desire to serve the community – and win her cases – remains unchanged.
