St. Maurice

(d. c. 286)

In 1230, the citizens of Magdeburg, formerly East Germany,
dedicated their newly built cathedral to St. Maurice
(depicted here with St. Erasmus by fifteenth-century German painter Mathis Grünewald).
The cult of St. Maurice subsequently spread far and wide across medieval Europe,
principally along the Rhine River in Switzerland and in northern Italy.
Also known as St. Moritz and St. Mauritius, St. Maurice was a significant figure in Germanic iconography.
Artisans painted, sculpted, and engraved his image on works still found today in cathedrals and museums throughout Germany.
Maurice was commander of the Theban Legion, composed of 6,600 Egyptian Christians serving in the Roman army.
Around A.D. 286, the legion was sent to Gaul to reinforce the army of future Roman emperor Maximian.
Ordered by Maximian to persecute Christians who were in revolt there, Maurice and his men refused.
The entire legion was executed at Agaunum (now Saint-Maurice-enValais, Switzerland);
Maurice and three others-Vitalis, Candidus, and Exuperius- were later canonized.
Throughout the Middle Ages, St. Maurice was revered along with St. George, St. Martin, and St. Mary.
From the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries, a group of German men who worshiped St. Maurice
called themselves Schwarzhaupter, or Blackheads, in his honor. They were members of the Livonian Order,
inclusion in which was determined by class and religion; their coat of arms displayed an image of St. Maurice.
Both captivating and enduring, the images of St. Maurice reflect Europe´s lasting reverence for him;
September 22 is still set aside to commemorate the life of this great military saint.

HUMANITY 21

The enclosed document is the result of consultations between an international group of
persons, to develop a theoretical and practical basis for co-operation, leading to an
improved psycho-social and economic plan of action in Germany and internationally,
A planned discussion group on October 20, in Berlin, will undertake these topics with
the resulting formulations and understanding, to be presented
on THE COLLEGIUM TELEVISION PROGRAM 9-10p.m. in Berlin, Oct. 21, 2001.

1. NETWORKING- Utilizing electronic media, i.e., internet, e-mail to facilitate events and

2. Imagery- An increasingly conscious choice of photographs, text and graphics to more
accurately and vividly depict a stated point of view.

3. Proposals to lessen/ eliminate, the failure of undertakings and planning of such
undertakings, in relationship to realizable resources. The recognition of reasonable
expectations of any venture or undertaking.

4. An agenda defined in local, national and international terms. Stated for purposes of
inclusiveness, thereby, lessening differences and heightening and highlighting, the ties
that bind.

5. Trans- Racial Co-operation and decision making. What alliances and how?

6. Cultural work as a means of resistance against implied or forced acculturation. The
term refers to the degree of pressure exerted externally or internally to assimilate a
person or group, into a given societal-cultural norm, against the individual or groups
preference.

Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson
(1878-1946)

Born in Galveston, Texas, Jack (John Arthur) Johnson was a skinny lad who traveled the country
by hitching rides on trains,
supporting himself by working at odd jobs and boxing as an amateur.
He became professional in 1899 but was unable to compete for the championship
in the United States - an opportunity he gained by knocking out Tommy Burns
in Sydney, Australia, in 1908. His status as the world´s first black heavyweight
boxing champion provoked hatred from some Americans, who launched a search
for the "Great White Hope," a white boxer who could dethrone him.

Johnson successfully defended his title several times, most notably defeating James Jeffries,
who had been coaxed out of retirement to fight him in 1910.
Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis wrote in the liner notes for his album titled Jack Johnson,
"The day before Johnson defended his title against Jim Flynn (1912) he received a note:
´Lie down tomorrow or we string you up-Ku Klux Klan.´"
Ultimately, Johnson lost the title to Jess Willard in Havana, Cuba, in 1915.
His career record was 78 wins (45 knockouts), 8 losses, and 12 no-decisions.
Johnson was inducted into the Boxing Halll of Fame in 1954.

The FAX read, almost incidentally, "Carnell Lyons died last Suturday."

During our early years in Berlin, through travels, quests for identity
and purpose, and through the auspices of Bob Harrel, proprietor of
"Talk of the Town," the international Berlin disco of the early eighties, we met
Carnell Lyons.

Carnell Lyons
Carnell Lyons

Carnell was a tap man from the streets and stages of somewhere, U.S.A., and had
emigrated to Germany some twenty years before our initial meeting. In the
face of changing times, taste, and opportunities, Carnell had opted for Europe.

But a desperate need for expression continued to grow and as a means of
addressing that need evolved, he became a teacher of tap, or as the Germans
prefer, a step dance teacher.

The years came and went and we observed a cultural awakening by many
people in Germany to the economic, artistic, and spiritual possibilities that Carnell
was providing through his teaching.

Carnell Lyons

We saw Carnell as a catalyst for innovation and attempted to record for ourselves, and
future generations, the contributions this old Black man was making to German culture.

To some extent, we were successful, but we observed the end approaching, with his limbs
stiffening, his breathing more labored and, most significantly, the light in his eyes growing
increasingly dim.

We were pained at the news of his death and surprised that if affected us so.
We don't know much about his other additions or subtractions in life, but we
do know that he motivated many people to discover themselves through the art and
delight of tap/step dancing and as a result, his pupils, present and former, are endeavoring
to continue the master's technique.

Carnell Lyons contributed to human kind in his inimitable and irascible manner
and people, including ourselves, loved and respected him.

Godspeed Carnell, and thank you for the lessons of life bestowed upon us and so many others.

A COMPLEXION CHANGE

Preface
german . polish . spanish . french . arabic

As long time residents of Berlin and persons traveling to countries with multi-ethnic populations, an observation of the complexion change of Berlin in particular, Germany and the rest of Europe in general, is an occurrence we have witnessed, read about and studied in E.U. and additional documents.

The population adjustments in societies are always accompanied by birth pangs of varying intensities and duration.

The United States of America, while continually requiring observation and effort towards creating an intercultural society from a multicultural environment, offers indications and some would say, proof of the necessity and viability of refreshing various societies through complexion change, as the older generations pass the baton of work and life, to younger persons.

Our interest is to establish a constructive contribution to the historic inevitabilities of climate and complexion change in Berlin, Germany, Russia and the European Union, in order to support the people of Berlin and other European societies in adjusting to the present and preparing for future realities of a complexion change, with as few violent and unduly stressful birth pangs as possible.

Our project is inspired by the marvelous impetus of former president Nelson Mandela and his supreme ability to contribute to a peaceful transition of South African society from one complexion to many complexions. The principle of that transition is what we are attempting to understand, emulate and apply, during the realization of

A COMPLEXION CHANGE
Intercultural Dialogue within a Migratory Society

The future is with us,
how do we respond to the inevitabilities of population change,
clash or cooperation?
Partial Portrait / Past, Present, Future?
A relationship of Europe to the world and the human contributions
to a developing Europe, at the dawn of the 21st century.

We appreciate and understand the uncertainties of the complexion change and we respectfully request all European citizens, residents and newcomers, to contribute what is necessary towards the historic complexion change of Berlin, Germany, Russia and the European Union in response and support of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008.
